44th Tay Valley (Virtual) Loppet
Due to Covid-19, the 2021 Annual Loppet hosted by the Tay Valley Ski Club has been cancelled. Although the Loppet has been cancelled, skiing on the trails at Murphys Point Provincial Park will continue as usual.
Virtual Loppet: The Club has decided to replace our traditional Loppet with a virtual race, meaning that skiers will be able to complete any race distance of their choosing at any time of their choosing between the dates of January 1st, 2021 and March 14th, 2021. Once skiers have completed the race(s) of their choice, they can submit their results using an online survey form by clicking on the links on this page. The race types and distances available to skiers are similar to those of past Loppets.
Race distances: The 5.0 km freestyle race and the 16 km classic race are double loops of the 2.5 km freestyle and 8.0 km classic courses respectively. Freestyle means that a racer is free to use either the classic or skate ski technique. (Note: The traditional 10 km and 20 km classic distances have been reduced to the 8.0 km and 16 km distances because of the necessity of eliminating the Ash Hill section. Otherwise the course is identical to the course used in the past.)
Maps of the race courses can be downloaded from the links above. The start/finish line for all races is located next to the Park gatehouse (same location as in past races) and is marked. Colour-coded kilometre markers (bright orange for freestyle and lime green for classic) have been placed around the courses to further assist skiers.
Who can race? Races are open to skiers of all ages with the exception of the 2.5 km freestyle race which is restricted to children 10 years of age and younger. Non-club members who use the trails by means of a Annual Park Pass or Day-use pass are welcome to participate.
Cost: There are no registration fees for any of the race distances and no prizes will be awarded. Top finishers will have their names engraved on the Loppet Plaque that is on display in the club chalet (Park store) and posted on the club website at the end of the season.
Submitting times: Skiers can ski and submit results for any race distance for as many times as they choose. Results are based on the honour-system, no GPS-based system is required. Results will be posted to the club website regularly. SUBMIT TIMES HERE!
